Welcome to Teach Jazz 101!
This page grew out of the Beginning Band 101 eBook written by Tom Taylor. While the book proved to be a valuable resource for teachers of Beginning Band, obviously music education doesn't stop there. This collection of articles, lesson plans, assessment tools, recordings and videos was started by Tom Taylor with a large contribution from Jeff Graham, is curated by Joel Windsor, and welcomes contributions from any music educator!
This resource does not claim ownership over any content herein, and links to other resources wherever possible to ensure appropriate attribution is provided. Teach Jazz 101 simply serves as a free connection tool, helping music educators find the resources they need as quickly as can for free.
The Wealth of TeachJazz 101 is in the Videos
While the articles are certainly a good starting point, the one common thread you will read in those articles is one immutable truth: Jazz is an Aural Tradition. The best way to learn jazz is to learn it aurally. Therefore the best resources sit inside TeachJazz 101 TV, where you will find thousands of videos that can be used as teaching tools, aides and resources for helping your young jazz musicians.
In the near future we hope to offer a page where you can freely contribute your own resources or other resources you are aware of, with the goal of making this the most complete treasure trove of music education resources possible. In the meantime, please feel free to use any resource you see on this site. If the resource has been developed by another person, we simply ask that you provide appropriate attributions wherever possible.
